Which court hears the case
The Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, has four divisions: Central in downtown San Diego, East County in El Cajon, North County in Vista and South County in Chula Vista. For limited and unlimited civil cases, though, Local Rule 1.2.2(E) divides venue into only two divisions, Central and North County, and includes the East and South County divisions in Central. A civil case from Chula Vista or El Cajon is therefore filed with the Central Division downtown, whose civil business office is in the Hall of Justice, 330 West Broadway, not at the courthouse nearest to where it happened. North County cases follow the court’s zip code list (Local Rule 1.2.2(C)) to the North County Division, 325 South Melrose Drive, Vista. Local Rules effective January 1, 2026.
Trauma centers
Scripps Mercy Hospital, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and UC San Diego Medical Center are Level I trauma centers; Sharp Memorial Hospital and Palomar Medical Center are Level II; Rady Children’s Hospital is a pediatric Level I trauma center. Claims against a city, the county or the state
If a public vehicle or a dangerous public road was involved, a written claim has to be presented to the public entity within six months, before any lawsuit (Government Code section 911.2). Other injury lawsuits are generally subject to a two year limit (Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1).
